Mexico Denounces US’ Continued Disregard for Will of Majority at UN Discussion of Cuban Blockade

New York. Mexico denounced at the United Nations General Assembly the “continued disregard” for the majority will of the international community, which every year demands the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than six decades.
In the context of the debate and vote on the resolution that again called for an end to that policy, Mexico’s permanent representative to the UN, Héctor Vasconcelos, reaffirmed Mexico’s historical support for the island and stressed that unilateral sanctions threaten the peace and development of peoples.
The resolution was approved by 165 votes in favor, including that of Mexico, seven against (Argentina, Hungary, Israel, United States, North Macedonia, Paraguay and Ukraine), as well as 12 abstentions.
“We observe a continued disregard for the majority will of the international community and the resolutions of this General Assembly. It seems we still cannot escape the prejudices and intolerances of the Cold War, which has shown its undeniable failure,” Vasconcelos told the plenary, after acknowledging the presence of Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez.
He recalled that during the recent high-level meeting, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente reiterated Mexico’s stance against the blockade and requested that Cuba be removed from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism. “Mexico will always advocate for the peaceful resolution of disputes and rejects trade blockades, which only harm the well-being of nations.”
Furthermore, Vasconcelos condemned the application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, stating that it “affects not only the sovereignty of the Cuban people, but also the interests of third countries.” Any unilateral measure, he added, “contravenes the Charter of the United Nations and the constitutional principles of Mexican foreign policy.”
The ambassador warned that Cuba is currently facing an economic crisis exacerbated by tightened sanctions, the effects of the pandemic, high oil prices, and natural disasters. “The Cuban people deserve a more promising future and should not continue to be constrained by decisions made in a different historical context,” he concluded, after reaffirming that relations between the countries of the continent must be based on respect and cooperation.
