Mexican Government Expands Free Internet Network

As part of the priority programs of the Mexican government, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has consolidated its national connectivity strategy through collaboration agreements signed in 2025 with the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS Bienestar) and the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP).
This alliance made it possible that, during the past year, 3,180 Free Internet Access Points (PAIG) were installed in clinics and 3,483 in tele-schools throughout the country.
As of the end of February 2026, CFE’s infrastructure already reached a total of 109,431 points installed in various public spaces, strengthening access to digital services in communities that historically lacked these technological tools.
Technological Expansion & Rural Connectivity in the First Half of 2026
Under the management of the TELECOM Coordination, the CFE reported that it projects a massive expansion for the first half of 2026 with the installation of 9,004 additional points equipped with 4G technology, of which 6,644 will be destined for tele-schools and 2,360 for IMSS Bienestar medical units.
Likewise, these actions are integrated into security and social justice strategies, such as the Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice, which provides connectivity to attendees of the Wellbeing Fairs.
In this entity, between January and March 27, 2026, 48 access points have already been enabled in 22 locations, ensuring that the digital transformation accompanies the social welfare efforts in the priority regions of the country.
