People’s Mañanera August 20

Every day, President Claudia Sheinbaum gives a morning presidential press conference and Mexico Solidarity Media posts English language summaries, translated by Mexico Solidarity’s Pedro Gellert. Previous press conference summaries are available here.

Olinia: Mexican Creativity Transformed into Technology
With 70 specialists from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and TecNM, Olinia is moving forward with a majority of Mexican capital, leaving behind the neoliberal view of Mexico as a source of cheap labor. “At its core, it’s about believing in Mexico and in Mexicans,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said.

Strong Peso: Confidence in the Mexican Economy
Despite the global changes caused by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, Mexico maintains a solid economy, with growth in employment and investment. Sheinbaum emphasized that “if there was no confidence internationally, the peso wouldn’t be where it is today.”

The PAN Wants to Take “The School is Ours” Program Away from Families
In response to the PAN’s proposal to strip parents’ direct control over resources and transfer it to municipalities, the President defended the current model. Less than 1% have had administrative issues. “It’s an excellent program—wonderful,” Sheinbaum said.

“It is a privilege to serve the people”
Nearly two years into her administration, Sheinbaum summarized her vision of public service. “It is a privilege to serve the people. Those are the good privileges—not the ones that were abused in the past,” she explained.

Audience Rights: More Democracy, Not Censorship
The new guidelines will include a code of ethics, an audience ombudsman, and complaint mechanisms, following dialogue with various sectors. Sheinbaum announced that they could be presented next week: “It’s a step forward for democracy in our country,” she explained.

Disinformation Networks: Sovereignty, Not Interference
Following the arrest of Fernando Cerimedo, Javier Negre’s partner at La Derecha Diario, for attempted femicide against his wife, the President confirmed that his group operates in Mexico and pointed out the use of bots to amplify disinformation. In light of possible ties to foreign agencies, she said that “they must respect Mexico. No intervention, no interference.”
