Collective Warns About Shady Building in Puerto Escondido

The Salvemos Colorada collective denounced and raised awareness about the construction of a seven-story building called “Casa del Faro” on a cliff in Puerto Escondido. What’s alarming is that the construction is being promoted by the real estate company “GDC Desarrollos,” a company with a shady history of irregularities in various parts of the country. According to the collective, this company does not have an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), a mandatory legal requirement for this type of construction, which makes the situation even graver.
Through a publication based on various sources from national newspapers, the group revealed that the company’s poor practices include the failure to comply with environmental procedures, the pre-sale of apartments without permits, and threats to neighbors and activists who denounce the construction work.
“Puerto Escondido is not a business; it’s a fragile ecosystem and a living community! We cannot allow real estate interests to destroy our cliffs, beaches, and natural areas for profit,” they emphasized in a post on their social media, where they ask the public to disseminate the message widely so that PROFEPA and SEMARNAT can stop this ecocide.
“This ecocide not only endangers the essence of Puerto Escondido, it also endangers its residents and the ecosystem. We strongly oppose this type of development, which, in addition to being out of context, endangers both residents and the ecosystem,” they stated.
The real estate company GDC has been accused of illegally constructing three apartment towers in Mexico City’s Roma Norte neighborhood. These towers were allegedly built without environmental permits and caused damage to the homes of residents. In 2022, an administrative court declared the construction of these apartments illegal.
The company describes the “Casa del Faro” project it is building in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, as a “development that combines the tranquility of coastal living with the natural beauty of the region, providing a unique retreat with spectacular ocean views and an authentic atmosphere filled with essence and tradition.”
