Sheinbaum Calls on the Bank of Mexico to Review High Pensions of Its Former Officials

Mexico City. Amid the debate over the high pensions received by former senior officials of the Bank of Mexico (BdeM), President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo called on that institution to reconsider those payments.

“It would be worthwhile for the Bank of Mexico to carry out a review,” she said this morning at her press conference in the National Palace, since those high payments are “immoral.”

She recalled that figures such as Guillermo Ortiz, who was governor of the institution, and Ernesto Zedillo, who also held a senior post there and later became President of the Republic, are two of the beneficiaries of those high pensions, which are above the income of the head of the federal Executive.

“We made a reform for the golden pensions. Which, by the way, we have to resolve a contradiction there is in the Constitution, which in one place says ‘limit of the President’ and in the other says ‘half the salary.’ That has to be resolved.”

To that end, she said, the Legal Counsel of the federal Executive is already working, preparing a response to those contradictions.

“For now it was resolved from the Legal Counsel in favor of the greater right, there cannot be higher pensions in certain institutions, such as the Federal Electricity Commission, the former Luz y Fuerza del Centro, Nafinsa, Banobras. In the decentralized institutions of the government those pensions cannot exceed the President’s salary.”

She noted that in the case of the Bank of Mexico “it was left out of this reform.”

That does not mean that what they are doing is not immoral. How can it be 400 thousand pesos (in pension)? And many of them worked only six years at the Bank of Mexico.
