(November 4, 2026).— President Claudia Sheinbaum recognized the victories of Xavier Becerra and Gina Hinojosa in the gubernatorial elections in California and Texas, respectively, and highlighted the participation of people of Mexican origin in US politics.
During her morning press conference this Wednesday, November 4, the president said that the results of the midterm elections reflect “a sentiment of the American people” and noted that both governors-elect have family and cultural ties to Mexico.
“We are glad that Mexican Americans have won,” Sheinbaum said, referring to the results of the Tuesday, November 3 elections.
The president highlighted that Becerra and Hinojosa each have at least one parent born in Mexico and that, in addition to their ties to the states they will govern and their respective political platforms, they maintain a relationship with the Mexican community.

We are very glad that Mexican Americans who are there have this participation and this recognition.

Becerra, the son of Mexican migrants and former Secretary of Health during the Joe Biden administration, defeated Republican Steve Hilton in California. With his victory, he will be the first Latino directly elected to govern that state.
In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott and became the first Latina elected to lead the state government. Her victory also returned the governorship to the Democrats, who had not won that office since 1990.
Asked about the meaning of the results and their possible repercussions for the relationship between Mexico and the United States, Sheinbaum called for prudence and said it is still necessary to wait.
The president reiterated that her government will seek to maintain a good relationship with Washington, regardless of the election results, under the principles of respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and collaboration without subordination.
She also noted that trade talks between both countries are continuing and that it is premature to anticipate whether the new political makeup resulting from the elections will change the bilateral relationship.
