Despite the more than 10 billion pesos in annual production generated by large, technologically advanced agricultural fields, farmworkers live on unpaved streets, without streetlights or public transportation; their homes lack electricity, water, and drainage.
In February, workers held a symbolic strike, demanding an end to reprisals and labor exploitation, as well as the payment of fair wages.
The union stressed the urgency of addressing the conflict since, in addition to fearing further attacks, more than 2,000 families & over 20,000 indirect jobs are affected by the company’s intransigence.
The US-based autoworkers union called for immediate protection for Tornel workers and their families, as well as a public condemnation of the attack by Mexican authorities and industry leaders.
Closing 20 campuses and road blocks throughout Mexico City and Mexico state brought management back to the table to secure an agreement for the education workers union SINTCB.
On March 18, striking workers on the picket line at a Tornel Rubber plant were attacked by an armed shock group of over sixty men. Four workers were shot.
Once the 40-hour work week is implemented, the workday may be longer as long as the new limits established are not exceeded and the corresponding payment is made.
“[Management’s] main objective is to preserve the exorbitant salaries they have never been willing to make transparent,” said the SNTNMP’s General Secretary.
