President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Citlali Hernández resigned as head of the Women’s Secretariat to join the Morena party for a special task in preparation for the 2027 elections.
“Yesterday, Citlali submitted her resignation to me from the Women’s Secretariat. She told me she’s going to the party, that she wants to go and help Morena,” the President declared during her morning press conference at the National Palace.
Claudia Sheinbaum commented that Citlali Hernández’s departure was in response to a request from the Morena leadership to provide support in the area of alliances for the upcoming electoral processes.
“I understand that Luisa María Alcalde asked her if she could help with this issue or assist the executive committee. And so I believe she will be given a special appointment to carry out these tasks,” the president stated.
Sheinbaum explained that the decision came after a conversation between the official and a member of her own party.
She also acknowledged that the resignation took her by surprise and announced that Hernández will leave his post starting tomorrow.
The President added that she will announce the name of the woman who will head the agency in the coming days.
During Hernández’s tenure as head of the Women’s Secretariat, constitutional reforms such as the one establishing substantive equality between women and men were promoted. One pending issue is the reform to standardize the crime of femicide in all the country’s penal codes.
