No New Talks Between CNTE, Segob, and SEP, Sheinbaum Affirms; ‘Tripartite’ Meetings Are Proposed in the States

After the sections of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) agreed over the weekend to maintain the strike, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo detailed that no new meeting between the Secretariat of the Interior and the teachers’ leadership is planned. Asked at her morning press conference whether the Secretariat of the Interior and the Secretariat of Public Education would seek a new meeting, she indicated “not for now,” and clarified that what is being proposed are “tripartite meetings in the states.”

She added that the teachers’ presence “has decreased considerably” in some parts of the sit-in in downtown Mexico City.

“The government has already presented its proposals; at the last meeting that was held, a permanent technical table was even proposed. The proposals are there, and in August we are going to the school-by-school consultation to agree on what changes Usicamm should have, directly with the teachers from across the country,” the president stated.

After merchants have denounced that they have suffered losses in the millions due to the teachers’ protests, she said they will be able to dialogue with the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, who, she stressed, knows them well after having served at one point in the Mexico City government.

The head of the federal Executive also referred to the change in her agenda over the past weekend, after an event she had scheduled in Zacatecas for Sunday was canceled, in view of the mobilizations announced by the CNTE.

She explained that the teachers “said there was going to be an interruption of the events, so, what for?” And insisting that there is dialogue with the Interior and Education Secretariats, she reiterated: “why would we generate a bad moment, so, we decided to go to San Luis Potosí.”

She affirmed that her agenda for the coming weekends is not subject to the mobilizations, and insisted that she considered that in this case it was not prudent.
