El Taller: Sovereignty Through Science, Technology and Class Consciousness with Jesús López Almejo
In this episode of El Taller, the interview program from the Soberanía podcast, hosts José Luis Granados Ceja and Kurt Hackbarth talk with Dr. Jesús López Almejo, better known to his followers as “El Profe de RI,” about Mexico’s place on a geopolitical board that is changing at dizzying speed.
López Almejo argues that Trump has returned with a stronger mandate. Venezuela has now been neutralized, Iran has been bombed, and a military operation against Cuba seems imminent. The only major promise still pending is military action against Mexico, a threat that keeps the Sheinbaum government permanently on the defensive.
The conversation analyzes how Mexico has managed to avoid direct aggression through a strategy of tactical security cooperation, careful diplomacy, and emphasizing the economic cost a rupture would have for the United States. But López Almejo warns that Mexico remains dangerously dependent on the U.S. market and lacks a lobbying structure in Washington comparable to those that countries like Israel and Armenia have cultivated.
The discussion also explores whether the United States is in decline or simply experimenting with new forms of extraction. López Almejo draws lessons from Iran’s resistance: investment in science and technology, a population with genuine national loyalty, and a communication strategy that confronts imperial propaganda on its own terms. Without these elements, he warns, even revolutionary governments can collapse when put to the test.
