Mexicans Demand Firmer Stance from Foreign Ministry Against Tel Aviv
This article by Emir Olivares Alonso appeared in the September 1st, 2025 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper.
The Mexican delegation of the Global Sumud Flotilla painted a picture questioning the country’s position on the genocide in Gaza.
On the asphalt, right in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), activists yesterday formed the phrase: “In the face of genocide, what does Mexico do?” in large white letters.

They demanded a firmer stance from Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s government against the actions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s regime, which has left thousands dead and famine in Palestinian territory, and demanded the severance of diplomatic relations with the State of israel.
“It’s not a war, it’s genocide!”, “Claudia, damn it, break up with Netanyahu!”, “The children of Gaza are not a threat!” were some of the slogans of the protesters.
The activity was the Mexican delegation’s contribution to the initiative led by the Global Sumud Flotilla, which set sail yesterday with some 400 people aboard 37 small boats from Barcelona to Gaza.
The crew members are international figures and political figures, such as Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who last June also took part in a mission aboard the Madleen vessel, which was intended to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinians, but was aggressively intercepted in international waters by israeli soldiers.
At the event held outside the Foreign Ministry, Mexican activists emphasized that the Global Sumud Flotilla is a peaceful mission aimed at breaking the Israeli siege that has caused death and hunger in Gaza.
They called for continued sensitivity and humanity, and urged citizens to join in demanding an end to the occupation and the release of humanitarian aid from the Global Sumud Flotilla.
Mariana Monroy, press and communications coordinator for the Mexican delegation of the Global Sumud Flotilla, noted that today, “world leaders are promoting a world that is not the one we want, which is why we call for a better world that includes these types of initiatives. The most important thing is to give visibility to the Palestinian people.”
