Who’s Who in Prices? – PROFECO

Iván Escalante, head of the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO), reported that:

  • The average price of regular gasoline in the country is 23.60 pesos (US$1.20) per liter.
  • The average price of tortillas is 23.80 pesos (US$1.21) per kilo.

Recognition of Nurses and Healthcare Advances

Minister of Health David Kershenobich noted that today, May 12, is International Nurses Day. He reported that:

  • In Mexico there are approximately 400,000 nurses.
  • An additional 20,000 nurses have been hired for the Salud Casa por Casa (House-to-House Healthcare) program.
  • The program’s census already has 8,544,343 individuals registered. The census collects statistics on diseases and mental health.
  • A new series of house-to-house visits are planned to expand the clinical records.

Hiring at IMSS and ISSSTE

  • Zoé Robledo, director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported that 44,368 registered nurses were hired in 2024.
  • Martí Batres, head of the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) reported that 32,792 professional nurses currently work for the institution.

International Relations and Relations with the United States of America

President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that no official notification has yet been received from the U.S. Government regarding the withdrawal of the visa of the governor of Baja California and her husband and so formal information will be requested in this regard. In addition, Sheinbaum expressed her disagreement with the closing of the border to live cattle. She reiterated that “Mexico is not anyone’s piñata. There is collaboration, there is coordination, but not subordination.”

Electoral Security

The President indicated there will be permanent monitoring and support from the security cabinet during the elections in Veracruz and Durango. She reported that investigations have already begun into the killing of a Morena candidate in Texistepec, Veracruz

Transportation: Elevated Trolleybus

It was announced that:

  • The elevated trolleybus from Chalco to Santa Martha will have 15 stations, 9 of which are already in operation.
  • It will officially begin operating on Sunday, May 18.
  • It is an electric, non-polluting system that will reduce the trip from 1.5 hours to only 30 minutes.

Visit to the Vatican and Relations with the Church

Minister of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez will travel to the Vatican to attend the papal inauguration mass in St. Peter’s Square. During her visit, she will deliver a letter to Pope Leo XIV with a formal invitation to visit Mexico.
