The derailment dumped 70,300 liters of sodium hydrosulfide into a Sonora streambed, 11,000 more than first reported, contaminating 1.7 square kilometers.
Grupo México failed to clean-up one of the worst environmental disasters in Mexico’s history, while a government complaint pertaining to it was withdrawn after closed door meetings which failed to consult affected communities.
Napoleón Gómez Urrutia said the union was very happy about ending the strike, which broke out in July 2007 due to serious failures in safety and hygiene, as well as labour violations by Grupo México.
