“Never Again” a Massacre Like the One at Tlatelolco, Sheinbaum Says; Underscores Díaz Ordaz’s Responsibility

Mexico City. Fifty-eight years after the Tlatelolco massacre, the federal government reiterated this Friday that the main person responsible for the repression of the 1968 student movement was the then-president of the Republic and commander of the Army, Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, and called for the State to “never again” repress a social movement.
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo opened her morning press conference at the National Palace with the rallying cry “October 2 is not forgotten” and recalled the date as “one of the most painful episodes in the history of Mexico. The repression of a student movement in the Plaza de Tlatelolco.”
The president recalled that two years ago, at the start of her administration, a statement was read that was later published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), recognizing that the main person responsible for the events was “the one who was then commander of the National Army, the then-president of the Republic of the United Mexican States.”
Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that this responsibility was “acknowledged by himself at different moments of his life after having been president.”
Our solidarity always with those who lived through it at that time, their families, and never again. Never again a repression by the State of a social movement.
