Palestinian Ambassador Demands Economic Sanctions & Arms Embargo on israel
This article by Nestor Jimenez and Enrique Mendez originally appeared in the October 15, 2025 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper.
Mexico City. Palestinian Ambassador to Mexico Nadya Rasheed spoke out in favor of an arms embargo on Israel, as well as economic sanctions, until there is a withdrawal from all occupied territories. She emphasized that “war crimes must be tried in The Hague, regardless of which powerful nation opposes them.”
She noted that the recent agreement brokered by the United States government represents a “fragile peace” and denounced the murder of seven more Palestinians on Tuesday. She warned that ending the genocide is not enough; an end to impunity is also required.

“This genocide has exposed a world that preaches justice while funding oppression,” she stressed in a meeting with the Mexico-Palestine Friendship Group.
For this reason, she noted, the Palestinians are approaching the recent agreement with the caution they have gained from decades of experience. “Today, when we talk about peace, we must also talk about accountability and transparency,” she stated, calling for international press access to Gaza, as well as the free entry of humanitarian aid.
She recalled that in 2023, images of children “begging” with messages in English for help and a ceasefire were circulated. “Two years later, I wonder: how many of those children are no longer here, who didn’t make it to this fragile moment of what they call peace? How many died believing the world would respond to their call?”
“There must be full accountability for every actor who made this genocide possible. There must be an immediate arms embargo on Israel, economic sanctions until the complete withdrawal from the occupied territories, and freedom for the more than 10,000 Palestinian political prisoners,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, members of the Global Sumud Flotilla who attended this legislative body spoke out in favor of the designation of a Mexican diplomatic representation in Palestine, a state recognized by Mexico.

They also called for the creation of a committee of legislators to certify the delivery of aid and the peace process, and asked to “outline a path toward what could be a break with Israel.”
During the meeting with members of the Mexico-Palestine Friendship Group, led by Morena members José Narro Céspedes and Gabriela Jiménez Godoy, Workers Party (PT) member José Luis Sánchez González pointed out that the ceasefire does not exonerate israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump from their responsibilities.
“If Mexico broke relations with Franco’s Spain; with the fascist Pinochet (in Chile); with Dina Boluarte, who stormed the presidency of Peru; and with Noboa (in Ecuador), all the more reason to break relations with a monster who has not only his hands and face, but his entire body stained with blood, and even his soul and heart,” the Workers Party member emphasized, amid cries of “break, break, relations with Israel!”
