“I Want to Work With President Sheinbaum,” Mamdani Says; He Praises Her Policies

Mexico City, September 20 (SinEmbargo).— New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Sunday recognized the work of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to advance public policies that provide dignified conditions for the population. In addition, the progressive politician announced his intention to work with the Mexican head of state in order to promote avenues that mitigate the cost of living.
I want to work with President Sheinbaum, as well as with other leaders throughout Mexico… recognizing that the crises we face are global crises.

The New York official made the remarks during his participation in the Urban 20 2026 forum.
During his remarks, Mamdani referred to the impact of housing problems in Mexico, particularly in Mexico City, where he referenced areas such as the Colonia Roma neighborhood.
The mayor stated that he has watched “with admiration the initiatives of President Sheinbaum and the ways in which she is addressing the same cost-of-living problems and the importance and need for dignity in work.”
The Democratic leader of one of the most important financial cities in the world said that the Mexican capital is an international “inspiration” “because of the way it has responded to the care crisis in our economy.”
He also recognized the social work of the Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada Molina, who throughout her administration has devoted herself to implementing policies in favor of culture, sports, recreation, and the education of the city’s residents.

The official explicitly referred to the Utopías that the Mexico City leader has installed around the city, maintaining that this social project shows “a way to guarantee the dignity of working people and ensure that they can live a full life.”
In that vein, he described it as “a pleasure” to have the participation of Brugada, “who understands that the problems of the working class must be at the forefront of politics.”
Mamdani was accompanied by the Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, during a conference in which she also referred to the public policies developed in the Mexican capital.
For her part, the Mexico City leader noted that for decades neoliberalism marked the abandonment of national housing policy. In her words, housing was understood as a commodity subject to speculation, and it was assumed that only those with the ability to pay could access it.
The government stopped building. The only way to access a home was to go into debt for life, and millions were also excluded from the traditional financial system.

Nevertheless, she explained that Mexico City has spent 30 years in a process of transformation and that it now has a different housing policy, with a model that includes the participation of social movements and authorities in the sector.
