People’s Mañanera October 5
Every day, President Claudia Sheinbaum gives a morning presidential press conference and Mexico Solidarity Media posts English language summaries, translated by Mexico Solidarity’s Pedro Gellert. Previous press conference summaries are available here.
With Women: More Rights, Autonomy, and Protection
“I didn’t get here alone,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum. There are 1,001 LIBRE centers, 27 million women’s rights handbooks, and 197,000 participants in the women’s center activities. Femicide rates have fallen by 36%; the 079 Emergency Hotline has handled nearly 20,000 calls; and more than 1,000 women attorneys provide free legal assistance.
International Cooperation Must Respect Sovereignty
The President called for clarification regarding the creation in Querétaro of an international academy to train police officers to deal with organized crime—a project presented with the participation of the U.S. ambassador without federal government involvement. “If it doesn’t say as much, it seems normal, but it isn’t normal,” Sheinbaum said, noting that these are crimes under federal jurisdiction.
“We Have Not Betrayed the People”
With a 70% approval rating, Sheinbaum attributed the population’s support to the continuation and expansion of the Well-being programs and to progress in housing, education, health care, and medications. “We’re on the right track; we won’t betray the people, and we’ll continue working,” she affirmed.
Limits on Violence on Social Media
Sheinbaum announced that on Thursday she will present a decree to prevent the spread of violent content on digital platforms. “Social media platforms must take responsibility,” the President stated, and hinted at decisive measures if agreements are not reached with the companies involved.
