El Taller: Internationalism and the 4T with Stephanie Weatherbee Brito

In this episode of El Taller, the interview program from the Soberanía podcast, Kurt Hackbarth talks with Stephanie Weatherbee Brito, a popular educator, coordinator of the Secretariat of the International Peoples’ Assembly, and researcher on the international advisory council of Tricontinental.

The conversation opens with an introduction to the International Peoples’ Assembly, a global network of movements, parties, and unions founded nine years ago to confront U.S. imperialism. Weatherbee reflects on why internationalism has weakened on the left and why the right, by contrast, has managed to coordinate globally.

The discussion then turns to Mexico’s Fourth Transformation. Weatherbee argues that Morena’s greatest achievement has been the transformation of consciousness, but warns that the progressive cycle faces an adverse moment: the right is advancing across the continent, the United States is adopting an increasingly aggressive posture, and economic dependence limits the possibilities for deep transformation.

The conversation also covers Plan México and its limits in the face of U.S. sabotage, Sheinbaum’s cool-headed response to Trump’s provocations, and the need for Mexico to take on regional leadership in rebuilding Latin American progressivism. Weatherbee criticizes the suspension of fuel shipments to Cuba and calls for solidarity as a strategy of resistance, not just a principle.

Finally, the interview examines the rise of the far right in Latin America, the importance of evangelical churches and militias as the right’s social bases, and the need for the left to rebuild its social base through territorial work and self-criticism. Weatherbee closes on an optimistic note: the young people mobilizing today are more serious and disciplined, and there are valuable lessons from the progressive cycle that can be applied to build something more solid.
