El Taller: How the US Seeks to Extort Mexico with Energy Expert Ángel Balderas
In this episode of El Taller, hosts José Luis Granados Ceja and Kurt Hackbarth talk with Dr. Ángel Balderas, an energy expert, to dismantle the fallacies of the neoliberal discourse on energy sovereignty in Mexico.
Balderas traces the historical line running from Lázaro Cárdenas’ oil nationalization in 1938 to the 2013 energy reform pushed by the PRIAN, recalling that the PAN was founded in 1939 with the explicit goal of reversing the oil nationalization.
Balderas also addresses the case of Germany, where the bet on renewables and the closure of nuclear reactors left Europe’s leading industrial power on its knees, dependent on U.S. gas and with companies migrating to China or the United States.
The interview concludes with a defense of energy diversification, investment in engineering and public education, and the urgency of building a third floor of the Fourth Transformation that consolidates the country’s technological autonomy.
