Fox’s Confession That He Made “Calderón Win” Is Serious and Proves Us Right, Sheinbaum Says
This article by Lilian Hernández and Arturo Sánchez originally appeared in the November 3, 2026 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper.
Mexico City. The statements by former president Vicente Fox to a Spanish digital newspaper, in which he admits that he took part in the fraud of the 2006 elections, “prove us right,” which is very serious, said the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.
During today’s morning press conference, she was asked for her opinion on these statements Fox made to that outlet, and after listening to the audio, which was played on a cell phone, the president said that what the former PAN president revealed is “terrible.”
“He says that he took part in the 2006 election and that governing Mexico is like governing a company, as if it were a business; for them it was a business, for Marta Sahagún and her sons and for him.”
In that interview, the former president stated that he sought to keep the presidency of the Republic in the hands of the PAN and that is why “Calderón wins, or you can say it here, I made Calderón win, although it’s not very democratic to say that.”
In this regard, the head of the Executive Branch recalled the desafuero proceedings against then-head of government Andrés Manuel López Obrador, as well as the dirty campaign against him once he was already a presidential candidate.
She recounted that in that electoral process the electoral authorities were asked to recount the votes under the slogan that became famous, “vote by vote, polling station by polling station,” which was carried out in only 8 percent of all polling stations because that is what the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary decided.
Today Fox affirms two terrible things: one, that he took part in the 2006 election, and two, that governing Mexico is like governing a company and that it is a business.
