CFE: In Mexico, 295,000 People Live Without Electricity

Mexico. Around 295,000 Mexicans lack access to electricity, one of the basic necessities for everyday activities such as turning on a stove, using a refrigerator, or turning on the television, according to data from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).

A total of 4,473 communities lack electricity services and are located in rural areas, Indigenous communities, and marginalized urban areas, according to information from the energy company.

As a result of the above, CFE aims to ensure that, by the end of 2028, these families will already have electricity services.

The above is carried out through the Priority Program of Energy Justice Works, which includes the execution of 42,221 electrification works, with an investment of 18,916 million pesos throughout the Republic.

The funds, the energy company explained, come from the Universal Electricity Service Fund (FSUE) which is administered by the Ministry of Energy.

Electricity, CFE pointed out, allows for improvements in health, education and digital connectivity services, while also reducing migration due to lack of opportunities and vulnerability to climate phenomena.

National Strategy

According to the current government’s National Development Plan (PND), energy policy should encourage the efficient use of energy and promote energy saving measures and the consumption of high energy efficiency products.

In this regard, the document highlights that the National Electricity Sector Strategy focuses on “strengthening sector planning, guaranteeing access to electricity in unserved communities, modernizing public transport with sustainability criteria, and establishing clear rules to attract private investment.”

Currently, CFE generates 54 percent of the electricity in the country and private companies generate the remaining 46 percent.

Attention During 2025

According to the CFE , throughout 2025, 93,000 people have been served, with 10,421 completed works representing an investment of 7,142 million pesos, and by the end of the year, 12,235 electrification works will have been carried out, with an investment of 8,055 million pesos.

The company added that some of the projects are part of 18 Indigenous Peoples ‘ Justice Plans, and in 2025, 55,000 of its inhabitants will receive an investment of 982 million pesos to build 1,079 projects in Baja California, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Querétaro, Sonora, Veracruz, and Zacatecas.
