Mexico City. Following yesterday’s attack by the Israeli government on the Global Sumud Flotilla, the Mexican government reported that it is continuing diplomatic efforts to guarantee the safety of the seven Mexican activists traveling on the vessels.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, heading to Gaza with humanitarian aid, reported yesterday an “alarmingly dangerous escalation, with multiple vessels reporting targeted explosions and unidentified objects launched at and near the vessels,” causing significant damage and widespread communications disruption. It reported that at least 12 explosions occurred near the vessels.
In response to this attack, the Mexican delegation of the Global Sumud Flotilla called for a rally this afternoon in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to demand a working group to discuss “the concrete security and protection actions that our government, represented by President Claudia Sheinbaum, will implement to guarantee the physical and emotional integrity of the Mexican delegates aboard the ships and in response to threats from Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Givr to imprison them, calling them ‘terrorists.'”
For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated this morning that “in light of the incidents reported yesterday, staff from the (Mexican) embassies in Israel, Algeria, and Greece contacted our fellow citizens, who confirmed that they are safe.”
In a statement released on social media following the attacks on the flotilla, the Foreign Ministry added that it has contacted some of the relatives of the activists on the floats regarding the incident.
“The Foreign Ministry will continue to maintain ongoing contact with Mexicans and their families. Staff from @EmbaMexIsr, @EmbaMexGre, @EmbaMexArgelia, and @EmbaMexEgipto will continue monitoring the route and condition of Mexicans traveling on boats in the Mediterranean,” the ministry stated.
