Morena’s Manuel Vázquez Arellano Warns of Ulterior Motive in Pedro Haces – israel Friendship

Mexico City. Deputy Manuel Vázquez Arellano denounced a deep disagreement within the Morena caucus over the establishment of an alleged “friendship group” with a rabbi sympathetic to Israel’s genocidal campaign against Palestine, promoted by Deputy Pedro Haces Barba, right-hand man of the parliamentary coordinator, Ricardo Monreal Ávila.

“We were never informed of this, so it did come as a complete surprise,” Vázquez Arellano told Los Periodistas, a program broadcast on SinEmbargo Al Aire’s channel. “How is it possible to invite those who are part of or complicit in the genocide taking place in Gaza, or who have spoken out two or three times to support those perpetrating this barbarity in Gaza against children and the Palestinian people?”

A group of deputies from the PRI, PAN, Green Party, and Morena received Israeli Rabbi David Yosef, described as an “ultra-Zionist and Milei supporter of the genocide in Gaza,” at Pedro Haces’s office. This meeting, as well as the intention to establish a Mexico-Israel Friendship Group in the Chamber of Deputies, was described by Pedro Miguel, writer and founder of Morena, as “lamentable, outrageous, and absurd.” In response to the criticism, Pedro Haces defended his right to receive whomever he wished, arguing that Yosef’s entourage included “Mexican businesspeople of Jewish origin” and personal friends.

In this regard, Representative Manuel Vázquez Arellano questioned why the meeting was held “in secret” and in a private office, while also suggesting that the encounter might not have been accidental: “The water law was being discussed… some groups against the genocide in Gaza invited us and visited several representatives in the Chamber of Deputies to protest against the large Israeli companies involved in water issues, such as Mekorot and others. So there’s something going on there.”

The Morena party deputy even revealed that Pedro Haces “didn’t even vote on the general issue, the water law bill… I don’t know what he was up to, but things like that speak volumes.” When questioned about whether these actions were driven by other “interests,” Vázquez Arellano didn’t hesitate to point out that the party must review the profiles of its members, as extreme flexibility can be detrimental. “Many within the party… we can’t continue with these kinds of profiles because in the long run, I repeat, they damage the process.”

Vázquez Arellano stated that the incident “took them by surprise” because they had “never” been informed, and he lashed out at Pedro Haces’ “arrogant attitude” and his justification for meeting with his “personal friends.” Regarding this, the Morena Deputy said that his fellow party member and deputy coordinator “is mistaken, especially when he says they are his personal friends. […] personal matters are handled at home. If they are your personal friends, let him take them to his ranch outside, but not inside the Chamber of Deputies where public matters are discussed.”

The Morena legislator asserted that bringing an open supporter of Israel’s war stance into Congress “involves the Representative” and “involves a position of Congress,” which is the main problem. Furthermore, he indicated that he does not share Haces’s work style: “Let’s not even talk about the arrogance, as you rightly point out, which I also completely disagree with. I don’t believe that should be the work style of a legislator of the Fourth Transformation.”
