Sheinbaum “Condemns What is Happening Right Now”
This article by Arturo Sánchez Jiménez and Alma E. Muñoz appeared in the July 25, 2025 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper.
[Editor’s Note: Despite joining cases at the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court related to Israel’s genocide of the Palestinians, with explicit use of that term, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has never once used the term genocide, prefering the term “situation” or “what is happening right now,” and refused to break relations with israel. Mexico is a signatory and state party to the Genocide Convention, whcih also confers upon it very real obligations to take proactive measures against a state commiting genocide, and is not meeting those obligations under international law, under the treaty which it is party to. Mexico’s Ambassador to Colombia attended the recent Hague Group emergency conference against the Genocide in Gaza, but Mexico did not sign on to any of the announced measures. Mexico’s External Relations Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez is a former rector of UNAM and a Zionist who received the Jerusalem Prize in 2015 from the World Zionist Congress.]
Mexico City. When asked whether Mexico will join the group of 25 countries—including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and Japan—that this week demanded an immediate end to the war on Gaza and condemned Israel’s aid distribution model, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reiterated her country’s longstanding stance on Friday in favor of a peaceful solution based on the coexistence of two states.
“We have, in all international forums, and our representative at the United Nations has publicly stated, and we have said so here, that we seek peace and the peaceful coexistence of two states, the State of Israel and the State of Palestine,” the president stated during her morning press conference at the National Palace.
Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico condemns “what is happening right now” and asserted that the country is putting “all its words and actions” at the service of building peace between Israel and Palestine.
