This article by Alma E. Muñoz and Alonso Urrutia originally appeared in the September 17, 2025 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper.
When asked, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo denied the possibility of an alliance with Canada in the face of the tariffs imposed by the United States, and emphasized that the three countries “want to maintain” the North American Treaty.
On the eve of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s arrival in the country, she insisted that they are seeking to strengthen Mexico-Canada trade.
“We obviously want to maintain the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement); fortunately, the working groups related to its revision are already underway. So, the three countries want to maintain the USMCA and strengthen trade with Canada.”
Sheinabum said that he and Carney will discuss exports between the two nations in certain sectors and, at the same time, investments in Mexico in different areas of the economy. Regarding Canadian mining, it has to comply with all environmental regulations, which they haven’t necessarily met.
