Mexico’s Food for Well-Being Agency Expects Production of 10,000 Tons of Cacao in Tabasco

Villahermosa, Tabasco. In delivering a report on the progress of the support programs for cacao producers, María Luisa Albores, director of Alimentación para el Bienestar (Food for Well-Being), said that for the next cycle a production of 10,000 tons of cacao is expected in Tabasco, of which it is estimated that 1,000 tons will be collected.
At the presidential press conference held in this city, she commented that currently most of the production is sold “en baba” (as fresh, unfermented beans), which greatly reduces the sale price of their product, so it needs to be fermented cacao, which, even though it takes a little longer, raises the price considerably.
She explained that the federal government will invest 32 million pesos to install 100 fermentation modules in the ten cacao-producing municipalities in the state, in order to facilitate this practice and so that producers earn higher incomes from their production. Initially, these modules will make it possible to process 6,000 tons of cacao, that is, almost 60 percent of the production.
