The teachers were found only one day after a Morena mayor organized a shock group which shot at striking teachers and kidnapped 15 of them in neighbouring Oaxaca.
The attack by the mayor of San Pablo Villa de Mitla sparked outrage among teachers’ unions & the local Congress, who were already demanding his removal and an immediate arrest warrant.
The teachers agreed to move to the side of the road and allow free passage, asking for time to do so. The mayor’s companions, who were carrying high-caliber weapons, began to shoot.
Teachers are demanding that President Sheinbaum keep her campaign promise to repeal the 2007 ISSSTE Law.
Union leadership says “the President of the Republic’s refusal to address our legitimate demands” led to the consensus to begin the national strike.
The Mexican teachers say they “are in a battle against financial forces that refuse to be challenged,” and that they “will have to build bridges with many organizations affected by pensions.”
Secretary Delgado says “there is no need for demonstrations” in the streets, but stressed, “we are respectful” of the decisions they make.
