People’s Mañanera June 29

Every day, President Claudia Sheinbaum gives a morning presidential press conference and Mexico Solidarity Media posts English language summaries, translated by Mexico Solidarity’s Pedro Gellert. Previous press conference summaries are available here.

Historic Consultation for Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples
President Claudia Sheinbaum signed the call for the public consultation on the first General Law on the Rights of Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples, which will recognize 69 Indigenous communities and peoples, the Afro-Mexican people, and 25.8 million persons.

The law will strengthen autonomy, guarantee rights and government funding, and be developed in collaboration with the peoples themselves. The President emphasized that “only with the Fourth Transformation has there been full recognition of the rights of Indigenous peoples.”

Sheinbaum: The PAN Wants to Return to the Neoliberal Past
The President charged that the PAN’s plan seeks to return to the neoliberal model of corruption and privilege by proposing the elimination of the IMSS-Bienestar healthcare program, building a megaprison, and reviving policies from the past. “They aren’t even innovative. Their proposal is to return to the past,” she explained.

Sheinbaum also questioned the PAN’s claim to be a defender of the homeland. “How can they call themselves patriots when every third day they go to the United States to speak ill of Mexico?… They are anything but patriots; what they want is subservience,” she said.

Mexico and the U.S. Cooperate to Eradicate the Screwworm
Sheinbaum reported that the sterile fly facility in Chiapas operates with Mexican staff and binational technical coordination. It will initially produce 28 million sterile flies per week, with the goal of reaching 100 million to eradicate the plague.

Mexico Steps Up Humanitarian Aid to Venezuela
The President expressed Mexico’s solidarity with Venezuela and announced the shipment of water treatment plants, food, and humanitarian aid by ship and plane, in addition to maintaining 250 Army personnel in support missions. She also acknowledged that Volaris airlines transported Mexico’s “Topos” (volunteer disaster emergency workers) free of charge so they could join the rescue efforts.

Sheinbaum Rejects the New York Times’ Account
The President rejected The New York Times’ account of alleged collaboration between Morena governors or officials and U.S. authorities and questioned the publication’s reliance on unidentified sources. Sheinbaum also noted that Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo had already denied these allegations and she reiterated that “we have no information that anyone is collaborating with the U.S. government.”

ABC, Justice, and Zero Impunity
It was reported that the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has reopened the investigation into the ABC Daycare fire and that the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) will provide all the required information. The President noted that the tragedy was a result of the privatization of daycare centers during the neoliberal era and announced the creation of 1,000 Child Care and Support Centers.

In other developments, she said the Federal Court of Administrative Justice must resolve the Nuevo León income tax case “in accordance with the law and not based on lobbying,” and reiterated that under her administration, “there will be zero impunity. The law is the same for everyone.”

Mexico, Hospitality, and National Pride
Referring to the climate surrounding the World Cup, the President highlighted the hospitality shown by the Mexican people, particularly toward the Iranian national team.

She noted that “the virtue of Mexican politics is friendship between peoples” and added that we should be very proud to be Mexican, recognizing that solidarity, happiness, and a sense of community set the country apart and strengthen its image in the eyes of the world.
