Mexico’s Milk for Well-being Is Now 100% National Production
This article by Alexia Villaseñor and Jared Laureles originally appeared in the September 14, 2026 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left-wing daily newspaper.
In two years, Milk for Well-being went from importing 40 percent of its inputs to supplying itself 100 percent with the production of Mexican cattle ranchers, highlighted Antonio Talamantes, director of the state-owned company.
“All the milk, both powdered and liquid, comes from our producers, something that gives us great pride. In addition, it is 99.1 milk and 0.9 fortifications with vitamin A, B2, B12, C, vitamin C, zinc, folic acid, iron,” the official elaborated in an interview with La Jornada.
Since 2024, purchases from Mexican producers have doubled, going from 340 million liters of dairy at the start of this six-year term to 760 million, with the goal of reaching 1.3 billion liters by the end of the administration, Talamantes indicated.
He mentioned that the milk is purchased from companies in 14 states, and it is expected to have a registry in 20 federal entities in the coming years. Jalisco is the main producing state, where almost one million liters are acquired daily, followed by Chihuahua and Veracruz.
To become a distributor, he explained, ranchers must register and meet a series of requirements; among them, the sanitation parameters for the milk. Once accredited, they are given a code so they can deliver the product to the 63 existing collection centers.
Milk for Well-being is distributed to more than 7 million families and expects to reach 10 million.
