Palestinian Solidarity Movement Demands Mexican Government Take Action Against Israel

Mexico City. With peaceful demonstrations and graffiti, pro-Palestinian organizations reiterated their calls this Sunday for the country’s authorities to take greater action against the Israeli government to stop the genocide in the Gaza Strip, which has already left nearly 60,000 dead.

Rogelio Rueda Segura, a member of the Permanent Sunday Sit-in for Palestine, commented during his protest at the Angel of Independence that “we have to seek and influence the Mexican government to speak out against this genocide.”

Given this scenario, he noted that “we would like President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration to speak out more forcefully, because we know it won’t be easy, we know there’s political pressure, we know that we continue to be a country that owes much to pressure from the United States.”

The professor at the Vallejo College of Sciences and Humanities stated that the movement has been holding sit-ins every Sunday at the foot of the Angel for 20 months because they have detected a distortion of information in the mainstream media used to justify the genocide. Therefore, he called on all citizens to join the sit-ins to gain more direct information about this international event.

Meanwhile, Daniela González López, international coordinator of the People’s Human Rights Observatory and the Common Platform for Palestine, noted that Mexico has a “very lukewarm stance toward Israel,” when it could be on par with other countries in demanding a ceasefire, an arms embargo, or the severance of diplomatic relations.

Standing in front of the fences protecting the Juárez Hemicycle on the Alameda Central, he accused the city government of committing acts of repression against freedom of expression, ideology, and politics by erasing the mural of a Palestinian flag they made on the metal wall on the 6th. “If they don’t censor us a thousand times, we’ll paint here again a thousand times,” he asserted.

For this event, the Óscar Guzmán Muralist Brigade of the Common Platform for Palestine dedicated its fifteenth mural to Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur, for her work in the Palestinian territories and her protest against the sanctions imposed by the United States.

González rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s nomination for US President Donald Trump as the Nobel Peace Prize winner, even though Albanese has also been nominated for the award.
