Mexico Does Not Have the Capacity to Confront the Cartels, Trump Says
This article by La Redacción originally appeared in the October 15, 2026 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper.
US President Donald Trump reiterated to his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, that the cartels “control Mexico”, and claimed, without presenting evidence, that the Mexican government does not have the capacity to confront them, during remarks to reporters this Thursday.
The president also warned that US forces will intensify ground attacks against the facilities of drug cartels in Latin America:
Oh, we haven’t even started. We haven’t yet deployed our full capacity on land. But this is already underway. We have to work; we are collaborating with Mexico… And, in reality, this is just beginning.
Donald Trump
Trump added that the United States knows all the routes used by the cartels and that “we are hitting them very hard… But the pressure will increase. They know they have a set deadline to, basically, surrender,” Trump stated from the White House.
