Call to Cancel Los Aguilars Concert Over Anti-Migrant Disdain

Last Wednesday, September 27, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro [Movimiento Ciudadano] announced details of the Grito de Independencia celebration for September 15. However, this angered the population by featuring Los Aguilar as the main act due to their disdain for Mexican migrants.

The members of the so-called Aguilar Dynasty continue to earn public scorn after their controversial statements. In addition to their controversies over issues in the entertainment industry, their comments have inflamed audiences with inappropriate remarks on topics that require seriousness, such as illegal immigration and even their alleged support for Donald Trump.

This has increased their rejection among the Latin American public, but especially among Mexicans. So much so that their concerts in Mexico have been heavily criticized. Given this, and their participation in the massive Grito event in Jalisco, several people have protested against them setting foot on Jalisco soil.

As part of this rejection, the people of Jalisco have launched a petition on Change.org. This petition is intended to force the authorities to cancel the performance of Los Aguilar—that is, Ángela Aguilar, Pepe Aguilar , and Leonardo Aguilar —and give priority to local and national talent.

Furthermore, citizens have made it clear that they prefer to see artists on stage who truly represent the social values of the people of Guadalajara. And not only that, but the creator of the petition against Los Aguilar mentions that they also do not want to witness a show that reinforces discrimination against Mexican migrants.

“Sign this petition so that as people of Guadalajara, we can make it clear that the Cry of Independence should be an act of unity and respect for our people, not a platform for discourse that reinforces discrimination against Mexican migrants.”

To date, the Jalisco residents’ initiative has 6,087 verified signatures after being created just last August 28. So far, the Lemus Navarro administration has not commented on whether it will ignore or address this request.

The Aguilar Dynasty is Accused of Winking at Trump

A few weeks ago, Pepe Aguilar and his children gave a concert in the United States. However, during the concert, they made inappropriate comments about the immigration problem that the U.S. government has denounced.

“Pepe Aguilar called at a concert in the United States to “do things legally, without excuses,” ignoring the harsh reality of millions of undocumented Mexicans who face persecution, exploitation, and human rights violations.”

Meanwhile, Ángela Aguilar wasn’t far behind, and internet users pointed out her lack of empathy for her fellow citizens after some statements. According to the public, Christian Nodal’s wife described herself as a “legal Mexican American,” dividing the immigrants with documentation from those without.

The petition addressed to the Jalisco government raises three specific demands: cancel the Aguilars ‘ performance at the Grito de Independencia in Guadalajara ; prevent the use of public funds on artists who, in the opinion of the signatories, “discriminate against and divide the Mexican migrant community,” and give priority to local and national talents who represent unity, dignity, and social values.
