The Congress of Labour (CT), the umbrella trade union organization, will not hold the commemorative event for International Workers’ Day in the Plaza de la Constitución on May 1st, announced its president, Reyes Soberanis Moreno.
“May 1st is a date of profound importance for our movement, so each organization may commemorate it in the terms it considers most appropriate and always maintain the spirit of unity, respect and solidarity that characterizes us,” the leader explained.
He stated that the CT Executive Committee, after analyzing the current conditions and in the exercise of a broad and respectful dialogue with the trade union organizations that historically mobilize the largest contingents of workers, made the above decision.
“This decision is the result of a joint assessment that prioritized the unity of the labour movement, the safety of the participants, and the suitability of the logistical and organizational conditions for the proper development of a gathering of this magnitude,” said Reyes Soberanis.
He emphasized that the Labor Congress reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the defense of labour rights, the dignification of work, and the historical struggle of the working class of Mexico.
He then made a recommendation to the organizations that will be present in the Plaza de la Constitución that the banners and signs used in the commemoration of International Workers’ Day should also include the logo of the Labor Congress, as a message of unity.
Soberanis Moreno emphasized that he reaffirms his unwavering commitment to defending labour rights and dignifying work. He also announced the actions and activities that will be jointly promoted to continue strengthening the labor and union agenda for workers in the country.
And he reiterated the legitimate and immediate demands of the working class, such as regulating the work week to 40 hours, reviewing the tax burden on labour benefits, among others.
